Description
This IC chip, reference U4020, is a backlight driver integrated circuit. It sits on the circuit board of iPhone 6S and powers and regulates the screen lighting. When it fails, the screen can stay very dark, flicker, show bands or switch off partially, while the image often remains visible when the display is strongly lit. This is a compatible part made by a third party, offered as an economical solution to restore the lighting function.
Before any work, switch off the device, disconnect the battery and work on a clean, dry surface. Protect the components from static electricity with an anti-static wrist strap if possible, and handle the chip by its edges. Use a soldering station at a moderate temperature and a suitable flux to limit heat transferred to the board. Check with a magnifier that the pads are not torn or oxidised before starting.
After fitting, check the alignment of the chip and the absence of short circuits between the pins before powering the device back on. Switch the screen on gradually, watch the brightness for several minutes and monitor any abnormal heating. If the battery is swollen, do not use it and do not puncture or bend it.
