Safety
- Lithium-ion battery: do not puncture, bend or lever it with a metal tool. A swollen, hot or damaged battery must not be reused.
- Heat: heat in short, moderate steps; excessive heat damages the screen, battery and seals.
- Static electricity: work on a non-metallic surface and discharge yourself before touching the ribbon cables.
- Before you begin, back up your data and switch off the iPhone completely.
- The glass can crack and cut: protect your eyes and hands, especially if the screen is already broken.
- Do not force the ribbon cables and connectors: they are very fragile.
- Once opened, the original water resistance is no longer guaranteed, even with a new seal.
Steps
Diagram · Device switched off, clean workspace 1Prepare the device and workspace
Switch off the iPhone, disconnect all cables and set up on a clean, well-lit table. Put on your anti-static wrist strap and prepare a tray to sort the screws by location.
Diagram · Unscrew and keep the screws safe 2Remove the bottom screws
Locate the two small screws near the charging port, one on each side. Unscrew them with the appropriate screwdriver and place them in the designated compartment.
Diagram · Suction cup, then pick 3Heat and loosen the screen
Gently heat the edges of the screen to soften the adhesive seal. Place the suction cup near the bottom of the screen, pull lightly to create a small gap, then slide in the thin spudger without pushing it in deeply.
Diagram · Lift the connectors 4Free the edges carefully
Run the spudger or a guitar pick along the edges to loosen the adhesive, reheating if needed. Keep the tool shallow so you do not damage the ribbon cables or components close to the edges.
Diagram · Disconnect the battery first 5Open the screen and disconnect the battery
Lift the screen like the cover of a book, without pulling or forcing it, and prop it up so it does not strain the ribbon cables. Remove the metal plate protecting the battery connector, then disconnect that connector with a plastic tool.

Remove the protective plates over the screen connectors, keeping their screws well separated. Gently disconnect the screen's ribbon cables with the plastic tool, then set the old screen aside.

Compare the old and new screens, then move to the new one any parts not already fitted (for example the earpiece speaker, sensors, protective plates). Clean the edges of the frame and fit the replacement adhesive seal.

Reconnect the battery first, then the new screen's ribbon cables, pressing gently and flat on each connector. Place the screen without sticking it down, switch the iPhone on and check the display, touch response and call audio before going any further.

Switch off the iPhone, return the protective plates and their screws to their original positions, then press around the edge of the screen until it sits firmly in place. Finally, refit the two bottom screws without overtightening.
